Directions Unit: Shooting The LadyKillers

Yesterday I finished shooting my adaption of 'The LadyKillers'. The shoot for this project went really well, although lighting did become a bit of an issue. When shooting in the upstairs bedroom, there wasn't much light coming in. Eventually the room did brighten up so I set up my camera to re-shoot those darker scenes and as soon as I went to do so the sun went down again. This is something to expect when filming. Next time I would consider using proper lighting but with the amount I had to organise for this project it was an additional worry.

Filming was delayed on the first shoot day as one of my actors was late; this was through no fault of his own, and a result of technical issues. After the problem was resolved he was on his way. Meanwhile I decided to not delay progress and got my actors to have a read through of the script together (me filling in for the absent). This gave my actors the chance to get to know each other and be more comfortable with each other when filming; they had chance to bounce off each other properly which worked in my favour in the end, as they were fantastic in working together. Once my other actor had arrived I introduced him to everyone and everyone to him. We then began blocking scene two upstairs. At the beginning of filming I was a little concerned about timing with the stress of everything on the day. I feel I rushed a little but when I got into the flow of things timing was no longer an issue. I managed to stay calm and collected throughout, which kept my crew and actors calm too.
As mentioned earlier, lighting was an issue and if I could go back I would at least give LED lights a try. I wanted to create this more natural lighting inside, so even those may not have worked out well. I had to improvise by using the artificial lighting available in the room which created this warm look. This wasn't really what I intended for in the upstairs scenes, but I could always make it feel colder in post production.
I part I needed to choreograph was when all the men rush to their instruments after Mrs. Wilberforce knocks on the door. I wanted to try and make this humorous where everyone is rushing about and the Major is trying to get to his violin but keeps getting pushed aside, until Marcus swiftly walks past him. It took several attempts to film this and get it to how I wanted it.

After the first day (when I required all cast) was finished, I felt more relaxed as I only had two actors the following day (Marcus and Mrs. Wilberforce). This soot day was pretty straight forward. I wanted to create humorous suspense for Marcus' arrival and did this by having the iconic silhouette at the door, living room and the kitchen window. The shots filmed on the stairs were awkward because the were so narro; luckily i had included this hazard on my risk assessment in the event of an accident. Fortunately, there were no accidents and i managed to get the shots I wanted.
