Major Project: Camera Research

In the pre-production unit, we were deciding on equipment and one of our final decisions was to hire a couple of Cannon 5D's with 35mm and 200mm lenses (see:https://georgewing42.blogspot.com/2018/11/pre-production-camera-researchtest-shoot.html).

However, having tested this in practice with out Innovation of Justice Test Shoot, we found that this perhaps wasn't the best option for us, desite our initial thoughts. It is therefore subje to change. Now, before we went off hring any equipment, it was important to see what we could use from the unis equipment store room. Unfortunately the Panasonics are all booked out for the day we're filming, however there are stil more options available. They do have Cannon 7D's, but after establishing we aren't keen on the DSLR look we looked into potentially the JVC GY-HM890 FULL HD CAMCORDER.

We went into the sotre room and asked Ferg if we could have a little play about with this camera and he was fine for us to do so. After palying with it (which was difficult given the amount of settings) we found this wasn't the camera we were going for or neccisarily needed for our production. Whilst it was effective in picking up documentary footage, it was mainly for on the go wiht it's gick auto-focus and settings desinged for caspturing footage quickly. Perhaps this would've actually been better for our Innovation Of Justice Shoot for its quick focus. Battling to and from the stage and audiece was challenging to quickly focus on the Panasonics.

By trial and error, we again established this wasnt the right camera for us. The Sony PMW EX 1R XDCAM whilst a good camera still, after using the panasonics our eyes have been spoilt and I think going backwards for the major project like this would be regretable.

It was back to the drawign board; given I had conducted some throrough camera research in the last unit, I knew what many of our other options were...or at least I thought I did. We were really keen in using the cannon c300 for its high quality, professional industry standard reliability. I also knew my way around this camera haing used it before on many occasions; the Cannon user interface remains fairly concistant. However, before I did knock it for it not really giving ius a cinematic look and I think that that is a little unfair, it is also true and not neccisarily the best camera we could go for wiht the amount we would be spending on hiring it.
