As Live Production: VT Style research

The style and era of a show can very much be shown in its aesthetic appearance. In our VT's it would be good to portray an era based on the age/style of clothing through the colours used, location, lighting, camera angles/lens and aspect ratio.

80s Example

"Set in a showroom in Essex in the mid-80s, charismatic salesman Vincent Swan leads his unscrupulous sales team. Smart, handsome and confident, Vincent will happily break the rules if it guarantees a sale."

Given the era this show is set in (80's) it doesn't mean everything in it is stereotypical of the era. So people here are still waring suits and not walking around in bright, bold contrast color outfits. While the suits are of the era, they're still clean and smart and not as baggy with fat ties as you may expect.

Bruno Mars Music Video has a 70's theme in the musics sound and videos style/aesthetic created through lighting and the camera lens.

Holga lens

The Holga lens has the advantage of creating this old camera style view. That in corporation with some clever editing in post production can look really effective. "Lomos and Holgas are all the rage now, as digital photography advances ever forward and all users want is to ironically go back to the retro-age." (thephoblographer.com, 2013)

Pros and Cons:

Pros
  • It’s a Holga lens for your DSLR for crying out loud!
  • Nothing extra, literally plug-and-play
  • Very cheap

Cons
  • No electronic anything.
  • The focus ring is strangely difficult to turn
  • If it’s your first Holga, focusing takes a while to get use to

OLD TO NEW

Would be good to include a montage shot in this 80's cinematography style. It could start off with a presenter in the attic looking through a box which contains old vinyl records and an old band t-shirt. This adds a relatable scenario to many viewers at home and would be a great section idea for the 80's part if we're including parts from 60's, 70's, 80's and potentially the 90's.

In research, Alex found some clips to edit into a small montage. This was to show the Holga lens in action.
