News Production: DIY Tech
I am working in a group with Jack, Gavin and Simon and today we had a brainstorm after our unit briefing to find out what we could make a news channel on. We really liked one of the examples of the work of previous students who's target audience was students. We found this something that we could relate to ourselves so would be something we would be passionate about and take an interest in.
Our first idea was to base it on university courses where students are made to pay for their own materials rather than the universities providing it. It was also about students taking courses in nursing and how there has been a significant drop in people choosing such courses as a result of the rise in uni fees and having their funds cut (previously the government would fund those degrees).
For a segment of each episode I though it would be a good idea to do something more light-hearted too. We want it to engage our target audience of students by keeping it humorous and interesting without distracting from the serious topics. Many young people are interested in technology, so I thought of having an interesting tech bit where we view technology like the best laptop for your area of work. It would also be cool to do a useful tech DIY section. For example:
How To Turn Your Phone Into A DIY Photo Projector
Use a shoe box and magnifying glass to crate a projector for your phone.
Doing a demonstration video could be interesting and allows viewers to try it themselves so they are interacting with us even more, and the best part is it's cheap and creative!

We had a meeting with Helen to discuss the idea and she gave us some really positive feedback. We were able to elaborate on ideas ad assign each other roles to do research. Something I was able to learn from this meeting was that we can start with something rather broad. Take the nursing students topic for example; it's a very broad and complex area but if in research we find something specific that is particularly interesting we could make that our focus. As it stands for the beginning research stages Gavin and Simon are looking into this topic. I am looking into budgeting for students (which could link to DIY tech), and Jack will be looking at the pros and cons of stating at home or accommodation.
