Pre-Production: Inspired DoP Jonathan Young

Jonathan Young
Lighting Cameraman / Documentary DoP

Johnathan says "2018 has so far been another superb year of shooting high profile documentaries with glorious images for household broadcasters & brand content." ( The cinematic look is clearly something he is fighting for and is a clear ambition for him. He is the main DoP for both Ross Kemp's programmes and Simon Reeve on his travel adventures broadcast on BBC 2, and trying to encourage the cinematic style to reach more platforms and documentary broadcasters.Young's camera work on both series has received a lot of recognition for its gritty access style and determination to cover an untold story. This is something I am really hoping to achieve myself as DoP; I want to tell these untold stories on evidence disclosure and really hear it from the people it is affecting. This is something I have inlcluded in my DoP/Editor Statement.

I have again been nominated this year for the GTC award for camera work excellence on the Reeve Russia series.Filming is just about to start later for a new series with Simon Reeve on another great travel adventure,so watch this space for updates. I was also the main DoP on the well received ITV 1 Primetime doc "Prince Harry and Meghan -Truly,Madly,Deeply". My sympathetic and cinematic lighting of Hollywood celebs was picked out by the commissioners. I also applied the same lighting techniques to my work on the 4K Netflix series I shot about the "Real Narcos" including interview with the real Javier Pena and Steve Murphy who captured the notorious Pablo Escobar.

I consistently aim to work to the highest standards in every discipline. I believe I have excellent organizational and communicative skills, coupled with the ability to enthuse, focus and concentrate the attention of any creative team. This approach to my work has helped me successfully complete countless tough and diverse productions. Fully HEFAT trained, I have shot in 110 countries (so far!)

One thing I love about his work is the way he puts his own style into his work. Sometimes it is hard to find a unique style, and Young has the ablitly to shoot really nice interivews and also create a story from them, like incorporating a cinematic glitch effect.

Medium Close Up interview, shallow depth of field, rule of thirds. This is the perfect example of a well shot interview.

The glitch effect was incorporated here with the ppresenter talking. I really enjoy the way this is a piece to camera, discissing technology, and the glitch effect has similar themes, bringing the topic into the shooting/editing. Young will usually shoot to edit, and as DoP and editor it is something I can also look into.
