Today Jack and I had a catchup meeting with Simon to see where we would take our project further and how we could improve on our pre-production. This meeting was very productive overall and it has given me and Jack a few more ideas to develop. Below is a scan of the notes from the full meeting but I will pick out the essential parts. After answering a few concerns Simon had with sound and crew, me and Jack informed him of our sound man who we have hired, we moved onto the structure/aim of the documentary. Simons main issue was that whilst all our interviewees were great with some genuinely interesting stories, they were not all linked in terms of evidence being withheld; for example, some of them seem more about miscarriages of justice. After brainstorming a few ideas, we reached a verdict of how they all relate. The system has failed them and this has caused implications to their reputations and mentals health.

Jack and I set out a rough timeline looking at our footage in a rough order of events as to what it should look like and what order it should be in: Pull out of the garden as mum says 'I think the police are here, Court room shots for liam intro- also maybe police Possible shot- jan when talking about not the case that the teens chased and jumped on him, cut to Jerry saying court always believes the “victim” or as it should be complainant. After doing a lot of research into the art of editing and how essential it is to color grade I found that in order to get the best accuracy in terms of colors it is important to have a screen calibrated for that. After more and more research I realised I had been editing all wrong in terms of colour grading and so I emailed John Sullivan from UCA Rochester who I had met previously when shooting for our poster for the pre-production unit. After getitng my laoptop color graded I found that the colors were naturally more orange and that the color blue is shipped standard with most apple c omputors. When color graded properly, the colors I had previosuly graded were very orange compared to what they now are.

Whilst workign for a company Bareska, I was able to camera assist for a shoot for a corporate video in the Gherkin Building. Fortunately, this shoot was using the Black Magic URSA and also the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema with a DJI Ronin S Gimbal. The setup for this was key to the aesthetic and final project outcome. I felt it was improtant to observe the setup and how the crew composed the video. Something that really stood out to me was the lighting. Having worked on previous projects and established the lighting seups, I realsie how important lighting is. However, how they worked lighting was facinating to me given they brought it outside the room. In the backgound of setups were glass doors. But in order to bring more life and depth to the images they had an LED light glowing throught the door, creating a nice backlight. I wanted to try and recreate this cinematic look with our own offcie recreations for the documentary and so I used the same lighting setup with the light abov...

In order to make the medical report more engaging and video-like I wanted to have it move and also create a shaddow on it. Whilst it was jsut a still iage, this keepis it fititng with not only the rest of the documentary but also the Netflix style. Netflix usually highlight the important text with documents in order to stand out for the viewer. In this I will also be highlighting any key pieces of information displayed by either highlighting wiht color or keeping the important text in focus and blurring out the useless information. Something that has inspired my graphics greatly was one of my inspired documentaries 'The dissapearence of Madaline Maccan'. In this they use clever graphics when discussing all the tweets that were posted on twitter and in doing so they are all floating around like they are all still deep in the web, in this social media world. An editor who has inspired the editing and the way I want to edit my documentary is Lee Smith. Now, Smith doest actually edit documentaries he is a film editor. However, because his style of editing is very extrodinary and experimental, especially with the film Dunkirk, the action matches but the timeline doesn’t. Whilst again, this isn’t documentary, I found it really interesting the way this is done and has inspired the way I have edited and to have confidence in a timeline that is neither liner or chronological. In Assumed Guilty because we are speaking to so many different people it is easy to get confused with the storytelling.  The basis of some of the best documentaries I have seen recently have been brought together by the editing style, and not every documentary is as linier as it looks. Today myself and Jakc began breaking down the inteviews we want to include in our documentary. Becuase interivews all lasted between an hour and two hours it was important for us to collate the best, most useful pieces of dialogue in constructing the story. We need clips that will aid the storytelling and bring together imprtant pieces of information. Logging footage was a tedious stage in our project and we knew this from the start. As a result of the long interviews, logging them would be very time consuming. I wanted to find the best way of doing this and I referred back to a book I had previuously researched in the pre-production unit The Shut Up and Shoot Documentary Guide. It said "logging footage isn't daunting..it's daunting because it's tedious and time consuming". (Artis, 2012) What did I learn?
