Transitions: More Inspiration

My first inspiration actually comes from a music video, and example video I showed to Simon in my first transitions one on one tutorial, where I was originally going to make a music video given it was something I hadn't previously attempted. However, the idea has evolved since then, but some inspiration has stayed in my mind still nevertheless.
Cinicom.net has been a go to source  of inspiration for me, and is something I watch in my free time to pick up ideas. Now this 3D camera track is very complex and didn't really fit the basis of our adaptation for 'The Wrong Mans' and is a time consuming process; and takes a lot to learn in the edit. However, it is from doing this unit that I have been inspired to research into some cool effects to make my third year project even better, and by looking early I can test and plan ideas. Whilst the tutorial below doesn't resemble the effect in the music video 'River' exactly, it has the overall concept. the two have been done in different ways; form the behind the scenes of the making of the music video, it looks as though the set was riffed up and the effect was filmed rather than being so post production heavy.

In order to get the ball rolling to practice this idea I sent the tutorial to Ferg to see what he thought and if it was something I could replicate:

He too loved the effect and is something even he wanted to give a go. So at some point at the end of this academic year, we are going to try and do a little set mockup (potentially in the studio so we get the same lighting throughout) and try and 3D track motion.

Learning and testing ideas this early also can help me plan my third yer project around some of these filming effects/techniques and I am able to see what works and what doesn't, what I am capable of in my own ability and if its something I could learn.

Behind the Scenes:

Something else that I took inspiration from this music video was the mirror shot. When watching the video, having the shot on the mirror made it feel like I was there in the room. It also added to the realism of it being an old DV camera, which was the artists (Eminem) and directors (Emil Nava) intentions behind the music video. Nava says in behind the scenes he: "Wanted to do soemhtign Em[inem] had never done before and then I thought imagine if you kind of like, made a documentary about the meaning of the song and almost blurring the lines I guess between reality and fiction."

The 180 degree rule really doesn't apply in this music video because it takes away from the realism. Having old DV cameras cautiously placed to abide by the rules takes away the raw feel and would tarnish the purpose. Having it angled on the mirror here in this particular shot has inspired my choice of shooting the mirror in 'The Wrong Mans'. My intentions behind this were to give the feeling that Sam and Phil are being watched which is triggered after Sams line "we are wanted for murder" which he whispers so no-one is listening; the two are very cautious of this and I wanted it to be shown through these artistic shots.
