Dissertation Proposal Essay: Lecture 1

Auteur theory Genre Theory  Formalism, continuity  Thinking about what the authors main claim is. Points for improvement  Introduction  Needs to be clear to follow  Clearly establish your themes and issues that will be discussed The conclusion is meant to be more clearly drawn together main arguments made and address the question title.  In terms of structure a good rule of thumb avoid mixing things up too much. Signposting, transitions, singling to the reader. Structure must logically develop the argument.  Getting that harvard referencing right.  Its about making sure it has the right spacing, font etc. Presentation is as important as the actual content.  From a content point of view you  Analysis, evidence and argument. Have a lot of theorists. Use their idea to apply to perhaps a different film or genre.  Having all the sources develops argument points along. You can describe someones id...

As Live Production: Del Brown: Lecture 1

Image
In our first session with Del, we discussed the formatting of the production, whilst exploring our individual roles in detail. Over the course of the day, we went from just a brief structure of the show to a complete structure. We thought about camera positions, set layout and the content of the show. Del was very useful to us in this lecture as he helped us all force ourselves together a structure for the show. Because ideas and items have been changed from Melissa and Katies original pitch, we've had to come up with more ideas to advance further on this. Studio Production:The Chosen Show 'Steal the Style'

Image
Steal The Style is the production that was chosen by the panel on Tuesday. We had a brief on the show by Melissa and Katie, who will be our two producers: 'A fashion chat show exploring the antidotes to the mainstream played out fashion trends. Targeted towards normal working men and women with average budgets.' The Objective - Why a chat show? – Current TV shows are competitive, we want to advise and entertain. - Provide an insight into the side of fashion that gets overlooked. - The audience will gain style advice, learn more about different aspects of fashion and also be entertained. - The studio audience will also be able to participate in the rating of the trends/topics – hot or not wall. The Format - Presenter-led chat show. - 4 different topics are covered during the show. - Each topic is briefly discussed by the presenter(s) – 2 topics involve guests, 2 topics are covered alone. - A VT accompanies each topic to give further depth / expl...

As Live Production: Job Interviews

Unfortunately our idea didn't get chosen which was a great disappointment as we had to scarp all the hard work we had previously put in. However, the idea that did get chosen sounds brilliant and so I am still looking forward to it nevertheless. Preparation with links Now mine and Jacks idea hadn't been chosen I needed to apply for a job in the production that did get chosen. So I signed up for my first choice as 'director of VT's and studio camera'. It was instantly time to prepare for my interview. "By preparing, you will feel much more in control. You’ll have anticipated what will get asked in the interview."(Shaw, 2016) So in preparation I took it on myself to research into the VTs used in the studio productions of previous year groups such as 'What You Sayin' and 'The Big Movie Quiz'. I wanted to do this not only to get inspiration but to see the sort of thing I would be dealing with and how far it is for the VTs to go. Re...

As Live Production: Presentation

Image
“Join us for our new pilot TV show ‘Politically Incorrect’, a show that guarantees, laughs, loathing and ludicrous behaviour. The show gives a satirical and alternative view on current affairs, public figures and what’s going on in the world today. So if you enjoy a funny, lively topical debate please come along, we would love to see you. ” The show gives a satirical and alternative view on current affairs, mocking public figures and whats going on in the world today both politically and socially. Its in a ‘Top Gear’ style with a sort of ‘Have I got News for You’ and ‘The Last Leg’ theme. The target audience is young/middle aged people, which seems like a big variation. However, we feel this show has a mass appeal. We will have three presenters who’s personalities bounce off each other. Two comedians and one more serious but witty presenter (to keep them in order and things moving). The costumes for this are to be smart/casual. This is to appear not as seriou...

As Live Production: Getting an Audience

Image
After analysing the size of the studio in todays workshop (6,000sqft), I came to the realisation that in order to succeed in having a standing audience, creating a good, energetic atmosphere for the show we would need to have a lot of people. Otherwise we would risk the show not looking as fun and lively which would impact the entire show. Many shows have warm up acts to get the audience in a good, laughing mood for a show.  “What you’re doing is setting the audience up to enjoy whatever it is that you’re warming up for. [You want them to be] on the edge of their seats.” (Locker, M. 2015).   Although it was a bit of a long shot, I thought of the idea of contacting 'ApplauseStore.com'. This is a international website which is the go-to place to sell tickets for popular TV shows in the UK, America and Australia including the likes of 'Britains Got Talent', 'Take Me Out' and 'The Grand Tour'. We spoke to someone on the phone and she asked it was po...

As Live Production: How to pitch

The subject and premise of your programme! Have your idea in one sentence Clear overview programme content, contributors, VT's, Style, target audience, channel. (channel 4 guidelines). A visual moodpboard. Can reference well known faces. Everything hinges on something access wise that is possible.  Content: Tell us how the actual formatting adds to the USP. Talent shows are based on looks and not talent. Whatever you're doing with your format find out whats behind it and what the intention behind it is.  Why the programme should be commissioned. A running order is very useful your pitch. Remember how much you loose in links, VT's, Make sure VTS are shown how they use. Floor Plan. In detail explain the running order.  Use Visual Aids- Powerpoint, Prezzi etc.  Clips give us the mood again to bring it to life.  Bring it to life, engage us to help us understand. Can bring props in costume. Let the Presentation be your brand in font and colours. Walk ...

As Live Production: Contacting Celebrity Guests

Image
In planning the ideas of our studio production me and Jack came up with the idea of having a 'Soapbox Corner' which was inspired by 'David Mitchells Soapbox'. The dictionary defines a soapbox as: " an improvised platform, as one on a street, fromwhich a speaker delivers an informal speech, an appeal, or politicalharangue. "  Because the show is regarding political/social topics, current and topical affairs it would make sense to have a segment in the show to discuss 'Pet Peeves' as it were.  "A pet peeve is a particular thing that bugs you every time." This would be a good place to include humour for the audience and guests to bounce off in a live studio environment. It then occurred to me that it would be even better to have a celebrity guest come on for the soapbox corner, something I felt very inspired by The Grand Tours 'Celebrity Brain Crash' on series 2 of 'The Grand Tour' where tow celebrities go head to head i...

As Live Production: Why chose 'As Live'

Image
Less left to chance and true olive. More controllable and polished. The opportunity to re-record elements of the programme and to make improvements to the intro and closing shots Energy live production has which we don't want to lose. Has the feel of real time with the feel of real time.  We can end up twisting to far and losing what we actually want. Truly live productions feel manufactured. Its this tension that can be hard to re-create.  Feel like we're creating something on the stage, something very different to film. In the post production far we want to make sure it doesn't feel too clinical or manufactured.  Jools Holland Hootenanny isn't actually filmed live despite it feeling like it is. Often used for panel shows, chat shows and entertainment.  As Live Formats: Political- Question Time Comedy- QI Would I Lie To You   Usually recorded in studio- Require full studio floor. Often use VT inserts which offers us addd value or o...

As Live Production: Deciding a Target Television Channel

Image
Channel 4 “Channel 4 has a special relationship with new talent and we are more likely to take risks on unknown comedians and writers than any other broadcaster.” http://www.channel4.com/info/commissioning/4producers/comedy Originally we though our show would suit a Friday evening as it's a combo time for political comedy chat shows. BBC has ‘Have I Got News for You’ and Channel 4 currently has ‘The Last Leg’. We therefore thought satire day might would be a good time as they don’t have a specific programme they stick to. Channel 4 diversity guidelines “We will cast even more disabled people as actors, experts, presenters or contributors in our biggest shows.” Amazon Prime We then jumped our attention to what was a large inspiration of ours which was ‘The Grand Tour’. This is a show quite unique to Amazon Prime as its not their usual original drama. Amazon Prime is still in it’s early days, and hasn’t got a political show at the moment. If in the ...
