As Live Production: Getting an Audience

Image result for the applause storeAfter analysing the size of the studio in todays workshop (6,000sqft), I came to the realisation that in order to succeed in having a standing audience, creating a good, energetic atmosphere for the show we would need to have a lot of people. Otherwise we would risk the show not looking as fun and lively which would impact the entire show. Many shows have warm up acts to get the audience in a good, laughing mood for a show. “What you’re doing is setting the audience up to enjoy whatever it is that you’re warming up for. [You want them to be] on the edge of their seats.” (Locker, M. 2015).

Although it was a bit of a long shot, I thought of the idea of contacting 'ApplauseStore.com'. This is a international website which is the go-to place to sell tickets for popular TV shows in the UK, America and Australia including the likes of 'Britains Got Talent', 'Take Me Out' and 'The Grand Tour'. We spoke to someone on the phone and she asked it was possible for Matthew (The Manager) to get back in touch wit either me or Jack. That evening, we received a phone call form Matthew who was very interested in our idea and liked what we had planned. We explained it was a student project but is still a pilot episode to be filmed in a professional television studio. He got us to send an email with the details of our project including a synopsis and target audience, and to get in touch if our project got the green light.  So, in many ways we've already sorted something that would be crucial to the show; a live audience.

If anything in our idea was to change, because we have organised so early in advance, we will be able to adapt to that. "Organising process makes the organisation capable of adapting to any change" (Samskia, S. The Importance of Organising in Business).

We sent Matthew an email the following day:

Hi Matthew,
Great to be in touch with you, Jack informs me you’re willing to offer tickets for our pilot show ‘Politically Incorrect’ on your website ‘ApplauseStore’ provided we get given the green light on Tuesday 23rd January. Thank you so much for all your help, and look forward to hearing from you soon. Written below is the synopsis for you and one we’ve written for the audience just to give you a general idea, feel free to make any amendments.

General Synopsis

We have two comedian co-presenters to accompany our main host (who leads the show and keeps the others in order). Our audience will be both young and middle-aged appealing to all backgrounds of men/women. The audience will be visible in the show and placed within the set. In one of our sections we will be having a celebrity guest (Nikki Fox, ‘Watchdog’ Presenter/BBCdisability correspondent [provided the dates don’t clash]) as well as two potential (unconfirmed at this time) celebrities (Matt Allwright, BBC Presenter) and Steph McGovern (BBC Breakfast Presenter).

The show will run for 30 minutes and in terms of its structure, we will have three rounds (recorded live in studio) and two pre-recorded VTs.

Synopsis for Audience

Join us for our new pilot TV show ‘Politically Incorrect’, a show that guarantees, laughs, loathing and ludicrous behaviour. The show gives a satirical and alternative view on current affairs, public figures and what’s going on in the world today. So if you enjoy a funny, lively topical
debate please come along, we would love to see you.

Once again thank you very much, if you have any questions or inquiries please don’t hesitate to contact either myself or Jack.

Kind Regards,
George
