Major Project: Location Reccees
Today me and Jack went around to some of our shoot locations for the shoot next week. We went along to the UCA Library and booked it out for our interview with Liam on Sunday. We checked the room out to check out some good potential locations and being on a Sunday, meant that the library would be ety. THe lights in the room were automatic but could be controlled manually at a switch as well so this will mean we have full control over our lighting setup.
We would like to include a studious background as Liam is still in university studying Crimanology. We would have filmd at his university but this was tricky to book previouslyt which is why we jumped to this.
The books make a good backdrop. Having writing like 'VOGUE' written on may cause confusion so we need to be sure to blur this backgorund properly with a shallow depth of field in order to avoid anyone reading these books.
After visiting the library, we went to HMP Swaleside to hand in our letter to the govner. We would like to recieve a prompt responce, but understand this does take some time. It was worth coming along to scout the loaction anywya and we found that there were signs all around saying it was a 'no fly zone' for drones. Drones are a big issue within prisons at the moment as it is used to smuggle goods to the prisoners. The prison was very high security and was a B-Grade prison. Across the road was there open prison so we went over there to speak to reception and they gave us the contact detials of their govener. With that we sent off an email requesting to shoot inside the prison.
The Letter to the Prison read:
Mark Ike,
My name is Jack Whiteley and I am a University for the Creative Arts student currently in my third year. Along with my friend George Wing for our third year major project we will be making a documentary about what life is like in prison and the effects it has on both inmates and those who work there. We have already established interviews with specialists in their field, people who have served time in prison and people who are high ranking in the justice system however we are lacking in access for GV’s. GV’s (General Videos) are a term used footage that you capture to cut to to give the viewer a reinforcement of what is being said. For example if a mental health specialist is talking about how lonely something can be we would get a shot of an empty cell. Therefore, I am writing to in the hopes that we would be able to film parts of the prison for our documentary. We can be in and out within an hour and I would really appreciate it if you could get back to me as soon as possible. I really do hope to hear from you soon! Thanks in advance.
Many Thanks,
Jack and George
