Story Telling Unit-Edit Workshop| L4 Sound and Tools



During todays lesson with Fergus we continued our editing workshop with Fergus. In this we worked on using all of the editing tools in further detail and working on shortcuts which are essential to the industry when editing. If you have a client paying you £200 an hour everything you do is going to be much quicker. If they want two clips swapping around you need to be ale to do this within a matter of seconds, otherwise it would be unprofessional.

The first set of clips we were given were from a car racing group. It included race footage and interviews. Firstly we needed to change the sound because there were a lot of background noises. In doing this I went onto:

With the way it was filmed there were four channels for the interviews, so I simply unselected all of the ones that were causing the noise interference.

Something I was also able to work on was the slip tool . I used this with the 'Cafe Meeting'  clip. In this I was able to move clips without interfering with the sound. It was a tool that allowed me to complete the task as quickly as possible and with little  fuss.

I then moved onto working on the sound to this in corporation with Adobe Audition. For example, in one of the clips I wanted the sound of the umbrella opening o be louder with more emphasis because from the original clip it was too subtle. To do this I:

and then it saved those changes in my Premier Pro File

Story Telling Unit-Camera Workshop 3: 180 degree rule

In today's workshop we were split up into groups and given a one page script and asked to film two characters discussing the 180 degree rule . The key to this task was understanding this rule and applying it. The script was a very basic duologue; the two characters come together, sit down across from each other and have a small conversation until one leaves at the end after understanding the 180degree rule. I chose to have my version with an entrance of one of the characters who is late for a meeting regarding this rule. The dialogue then starts as he begins to explain the 180 degree rule. My idea was to have them both on 'oppersite' sides of the  table, which could have appeared more tense, until the character understands the rule, the tension is broken when the first character leaves. News Production: DIY Tech

I am working in a group with Jack, Gavin and Simon and today we had a brainstorm after our unit briefing to find out what we could make a news channel on. We really liked one of the examples of the work of previous students who's target audience was students. We found this something that we could relate to ourselves so would be something we would be passionate about and take an interest in. Our first idea was to base it on university courses where students are made to pay for their own materials rather than the universities providing it. It was also about students taking courses in nursing and how there has been a significant drop in people choosing such courses as a result of the rise in uni fees and having their funds cut (previously the government would fund those degrees). Story Telling Unit- A play review of ‘Grandma, Remember Me?’

As part of my research for my short film, I discovered there was a play touring across the country. It was called ‘Grandma Remember Me?’ from az2b theatre company, written by Belinda Lazenby. After reading short synopsis I found it has a similar theme to my own short film, and could give me possible ideas, so I went to see it. After watching, I particularly liked the way they showed the decline of the Grandma, played by Belinda herself, in the way her clothes became scruffier and her speech gradually became nonsense; yet we still understood what she was saying. The use of puppets for the child and dog were interesting as it gave the audience an insight to Grandma’s life as she struggles to remember people and the puppets represented this well as they’re just wooden objects, not people: we see them as Grandma does.
