Story telling Unit: Research and plot
Music is the turning point
Research
The idea of music being a turning point came from my now personal experience. I had previously seen a video that blew up unsocial media regarding this elderly gentleman. He would be sad mostly, and it was very difficult to get any conversation out of him. However, when his daughter gave him headphones and played some music there was an instant change in his character; he was like a clompletely different person and looking at him from that you wouldn't think there had been anything wrong with him. This quiet sad man was now cheerful, laughing and singing to the music. I tried it with my grandfather and discovered it had exactly the same effect.
Have a character throughout as his son and the audience doesn't realise until the end that his son died 25 years ago. The person he thinks is his son is actually his carer or neighbour.
Scene Breakdown
Scene 1- The doctors office
Asks him if he knows how he got here, then has a flashback shot in POV. Its all blurred and bright, which symbolises its a struggle to remember. This idea was inspired by the BBC Television series Life on Mars, where the protagonist Sam Tyler keeps having flashbacks of the past. As the program evolves the same flashback gets longer each time as his recollection becomes more and more clear. This has inspired me to also have this certain memory (witnessing his son getting killed in a car accident) that stays in his mind but its all a blur, and as the film evolves the memory gets stronger.
Scene 2- Gets taken back home
He gets strapped into a Patient transport ambulance to get taken home. He looks out of the window and has his first flashback of his sons accident. Audience wont know this yet as
this only lasts a couple of seconds. There is then to be a ECU (Extreme Close Up) of his mouth breathing heavily. He doesn't know what happened but knows it was bad.

Scene 3- Home
He gets home, and we are introduced to his daily routine. He goes inside, and the place is cluttered with cuttings of people from magazines /newspapers. Uncle Ben's Rice packets. This demonstrates that he is lonely and his mental state is deteriorating. He talks to them , not in a proper conversational form but just in passing. So he would see the face of Uncle Ben and say, "oh hello there". He gets a knock on the door from his son (we don't know yet that it isn't). He calls out "who is it?" when reminded by a sticker on the door reminding him to be careful of who he opens the door to. The 'son' asks him how he's doing he replies "alright". MacLarry then asks something that vaguely indicates he believes its his son like "hows your Mother?" and he will reply "fine" with a slightly confused expression but a slight giggle. Would assume he's picked up a 'ya mom' joke from somewhere perhaps. Next he would ask if he's had his medication yet, and obviously McLarry wouldn't remember. Gives his tablets and then cooks him some food. Later McLarry watches TV and the 'son' says his taking of now. McLarry is asleep so he just leaves him to it.
Scene 4- A Dream
McLarry falls into a dream. In this dream he wakes up from his sleep in front of the TV. However, he is younger and is currently a vicar. This indicates his past when he was a vicar. the shots will be filmed carefully so the audience don't see that he is younger for a few seconds so would be MCUs of him picking up his keys etc. There will be a lighter lighting hue to indicate it is a dream. He goes to walk-up the local church where he worked and prepares for morning mass. He takes along his son to show him what he does, and to let him sit in on the mass. Their close relationship will be displayed here. His son is only about 10 at this point in time.
