Commission: Testing of ideas

After coming up with the up with the idea of having the montage playing through the logo at the start of the video on the old television as there is a slow zoom in, I decided to quickly give it a ten to see if it would be effective. This first draft was far form perfect, but it allowed me to see roughly how the design would look and if playing footage in the background of the logo would actually work. Testing ideas first is always a good idea and saves a lot of agro and time wasting i the long run.If you make mistake in the draft it doesn't matter because it can be improved in the final. Also, it is beneficial for time efficiency. If I was to spend a long time editing a graphic I chose not to use it it would mean I've wasted valuable time on perfecting something I won't even use. This gave me the opportunity to self criticise and have other people give feedback on what I had done. "That [criticism] means an opportunity to learn more about the person who you're ...

Commission: Overcoming Issues Research

Image
This technique is very useful when you're unable to film and all you have is photos or archive footage of stills that don't move. Because I only had images to include in the video, I thought it would be cool to animate them by moving layers and changing lighting. Something quite complicated turned out to be a simple change that made the video come to life a bit more. The lights flickering and image zooming out looks as though it could've been filmed on a camera. It was only after watching this tutorial that I was able to not only learn how to create this cool effect, but also inspiration with the possibilities of what I can do with one still image. At the start of the video there is a short montage of all different pictures he's edited and animated in order to bring to life. This light flicker is very effective and I had to actually improvise a bit in editing it. I had to actually edit the one image into two images. One where the brightness of the lights ...

Commission: Locations

Image
My Locations for my commission piece are all in the same area: Maidstone Television Studios. The areas of filming include: UCA Base Room: This room is where I will be filming the television zoom. I initially wanted to film here because of the white walls which I thought would make a nice clean background. I then changed my mind and thought it would be even better in front of a green screen. This means I have more freedom in post production to decide what background I want and if worst come to worst I can chose a plain white background then. The base room is a good place to film this as its hidden away, has a large enough space to set up a green screen and requires no additional travel costs as I wold be going into uni anyway, which is cost effective to my budget.  "By improving efficiency a business can reduce its costs and improve its competitiveness." (BBC Bitezize, Business Studies).  Post production facilities (dubbing, gallery etc): The post production fac...

Commission: Organising Shoot

Image
Organising my shoot dates was actually more challenging than it would first seem. I needed to film on days where there were no production companies using the studios. Their equipment would still be there and they would still be leasing them so I couldn't film inside the actual studios regardless, but it would be filming on less busy days so it would make accessibility elsewhere much easier.  I sent a simple email to Josh Sergeant, the studios events manager, stating what and where I wanted to film and the dates I am available to film. I though listing what I wanted and all the dates available would make it easier for him to compare with his and the studios own schedule to see what two days are the most convenient. In my research I came across a website on the art of scheduling a film for dummies and they said "you need to break down all the elements of your film." So this is what I did in the email. I said:  Hi Carly and Josh, With regards to filming dates I w...

Commission: Meeting With Helen

Today I was eager to improve on not only my blog work but also my commission piece. I thought it would be ideal to get a fresh pair of eyes on my work so far to notice any imperfections with my piece and throw some fresh ideas at me. I explained the problems I had experienced with Helen and how I planned on overcoming them. She threw back some more ideas at me and I made note of them, as experience through this unit has taught me just how important taking notes are as as soon as I leave the room I will forget. What I learned about improving blogger: Always include where I have my findings Show how many hats I'm waring be it  journalist, writer research presenting -find sources of information to support research into these roles. My commission piece: For some ideas and inspiration in my commission piece, Helen told me it would be worth looking into the works of old shows that are being brough back or still current today, and how they use their heritage to their advantage. Thi...

Commission: Quality Assurance Plan

Image
Quality of Filming I hope to make my raw footage the highest possible quality, despite the limited resources I have due to my low budget, I will attempt to enhance my video footage. I will do this by making full use of the equipment I have to me being a Panasonic 4K Camera, LED lighting and a fig rig; for really smooth shot I plan to use a rail slider.   Another seasonal consideration is the weather, as I’ve previously mentioned. This may include rain which can obstruct the filming if any goes onto the lens. This is a common problem amongst amateur productions, and an easy solution to this would be to hold an umbrella over the camera. Alternatively if not possible, i.e. when filming with a drone, I can attempt to remove in Adobe After Effects. Just by one quick search in google, I have already found a video tutorial on how to remove a spot on the lens in post production.  I could use a tripod for the still shots, which will enable a better quality rather...

Commission: Secretary; Organising and planning

In my commission unit I will need to plan so I can follow and maintain an organised workflow. I will also be able to brainstorm shoot video assets, and sources. The purpose of this unit is to give me real industry experience by working with real clients.  I have already made some preparations its soon as I was given my commission piece. Now it’s mainly about putting my ideas and planning into practice to eventually create an ambitions but exciting promotional video. Being my own secretary was in many ways something I was previously use to. For previous projects it was up to me to organise casing and crew, like with my 'Directions Unit' where I directed Alexandre Macendrik's 'The LadyKillers' were I needed a cast of5 males and one elderly female, all over the age of 40. For a student project this was a great challenge, not only to get hold of these actors but to also keep them on board. After casting, I needed to ensure the cast were all up to date wth everything a...

Commission: Storyboarding

Image
When you make a video for a business, be it a promotional video, a training video, or any short online business video, planning is extremely important. One of the most important stages of planning out your video is creating a storyboard; a visual representation of how you want your piece to look shot by shot. I find the process of storyboarding difficult given I'm not the best at drawing, and it can be very time consuming. However, its very useful in the long run, and is definitely worth it for me in helping me visualise my idea. According to go animate.com "We’ve all had experiences where we were trying to explain something and the other person just can’t see your vision."  This is very true, if I can't explain my idea myself then why not put it into pictures. Most filmmakers are visual learners, and looking at what I need can come across better than reading what I need. While a shoot list will be equally as useful, a storyboard will really help me to vi...

Commission: Making a Marketing Video: Research

Image
Many marketers want to get into video; it a great way to advertise a brand or product and its available on so many platforms such as social social media sites (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) so accessible for everyone to see.  If the content quality is high and has high production value it also gives the company the image of being high value. "Much to think about – from camera equipment and editing software to lighting a shot and optimising audio – the barriers to entry can be high."  (GO Animate) The fact that high end technology is available to us does also mean that anyone can essentially pick up a camera so companies can produce their own content. However, it does also separate the wheat from the chaff, so the best cinematographers can hopefully get recognition, although very combative. So, whilst everyone can pick up a camera, not everyone can use it to its full potential. Go Animate also say "Fortunately, the price of decent gear and post-production software has ...

Commission: Considerations When Filming

Prime Location This section will show how easy transport links to and from the studio area and local accommodation. I want all this to be shot early in the morning to get crisp shots of a winter morning. A stylised mixture of animation. ECU tracking a car wheel spinning and moving Shots of the Train Station; London and maidstone signs, inspired by the opening of Jools Holland Drone footage of the Studio; will need to be careful where this is shot as don’t want to include the construction currently taking place. GV’s of London transport; London Underground signs. The location will be shown visually with a map zoom to sky effect, which will give a good effect, especially if it zooms into the studios with some nice slow motion camera rigged smooth shots of the reception, interior/exterior of the studios.  This bit will be solely edited in after  George Wing Television Blog effects and so I will not need to film here. My only consideration will be to ensure I have the ri...

Commission: Meeting 1

Unfortunately todays meeting was duet to be quick between Laura and Carly, so I was to arrange a separate meeting next week. Because I was keen to resume my independent planning further, I decided to write up some questions for Laura to ask in her meeting. Is there any archive footage accessible for me to use? Have a look at the Heritage section of the website and you’ll find some historical clips from YouTube on there. ( http://www.maidstonestudios.com/our-heritage ) Is it possible to use any footage from shows filmed here such as Jools Holland and Take Me Out to include? You can use anything from social media & the TMO website, only from previous seasons though Is it possible to film inside the gallery whilst people are working on a show? Speak to Carly and Josh as they can try to arrange this for you. Is it possible to shoot the studio empty at any point between November and December? Also is it possible to have someone there available to set up the lights? Yes that shoul...

Commission: Finding Music

Image
Finding music for this piece was really tricky. The music chosen can effect the entire tone of the piece. I was a cross between having something motivational and something funky/electronic. Electronic-type music would work well to create excitement and good fast paces transitions which will hod the viewers attention for a short video. I first attempted to edit the piece to Eminems Lose Yourself, A royalty free instrumental). This is a song familiar to most and is know for its motivational connotations. It did work for the piece but it still didn't give off the atmosphere I had initially hoped. Whilst the track worked well it didn't have enough beats in it to cut to. This made the video slow and potentially boring. I needed a song that few people are familiar with but will remember after watching this video. The two would be associated with each other. I found a track by 'Mounikia' called 'One Two'. This song was really cool as it was elect...

Commission: Editing logo graphics

Image
As part of my commission my brief was to include some animated graphics: "Animate Maidstone Studios Logo for top and tail sting Animating map graphics of location relative to London and Motorway and rail links. Possible stylised 3D animation of Building and exploded views of Studio 1 & 2" My first graphic to animate I wanted to be the logo so I could show Carly in our meeting to see her opinions on the logo graphic. This graphic if good enough could be used in all branding for the studios videos and I hope to include in all of videos I am due to make. The idea of animating it on a television would look particularly good.   Editing the logo graphic was really interesting and insightful. I tried several different versions of the logo before deciding on an official one myself, but I will ask Carly to see which one she prefers. I got in touch with Joe, an animation student from UCA, who agreed to help me with graphics.

Commission: Producing

GOV.UK defines being a producer as managing "the production process from start to finish, organising people and resources." After this project I can completely agree with that; I have had to see every single detail for this project from start to finish. It was therefore important for me to plan myself what my duties may include so I can tick this off. When researching what it is to be a producer I came across the 'National Career Service' and in the job profiles 'producer' came up. It gave a list of the included duties which are as follows: deciding which projects to produce, or creating programme ideas yourself  reading scripts  securing the rights for books or screenplays, or negotiating with writers to produce new screenplays  identifying sources of funding and raising finances  working out what resources are needed  checking and approving locations  pitching to television broadcasters to commission your programme  planning filmi...

Commission: Final Cut Pro One-on-One Tutorial Two

Image
Today I had another Lesson with Fergus in using 'Final Cut Pro' This lesson I started with discussing last weeks lesson and how I felt about the software and the language it uses. My opinions on it were indifferent, but I did feel somewhat confused with its terminology as its so different to Premier Pro, a software I'm use to. Fergus gave me so standard clips to edit together into the timeline.  I learned a lot from this challenge, the main thing being how to format the timeline in Final Cut Pro and organise files into folders; previously, anything I had edited, although looked good at the end, had a messy timeline, with unorganised/categorised folders. The final edit with this was learning so I wasn't entirely pleased with the final outcome, however, its all experience, and how to actually do this in a software I wasn't use to. As a backup for help I will refer to various videos like the following in the link below:

Critical Perspectives: Creating Meaning

When we think about studying the media we think about images and structure to create meaning. Ability to frame, inform and influence. Culture, economic and ideological ideas in society. Construct more subtle meanings. AN INTERTEXTUAL RELATIONSHIP HAS EVOLVED The idea f intertextuality (1996 "word, dialogue and novel and the bounded text" Thus any work is a process of REPETITION and TRANSFORMATION "Any texts is absorption and transformation of another" There are traces of other words always present in any new work. It may be that its more overt "CNN-isation" Genre convetions eg. horror, sci-fi etc. Certain sounds that we associate with what is about to happen -e.g. Psyco music we know something bad is about to happen. As genres evolve abd "Hybridis" The reader doesn't just understand the narrative, but the CONVENTIONS which it uses to tell the narrative which in themselves contain other references and meanings. Commission: Meeting 2

Today I had a meeting with Carly to discuss my ideas further and discuss what we do and don't like. I was pleasantly spurred to find the we were both on exactly the same wavelength with ideas. She said that what I had written up in the treatment proposals I sent her were exactly how she imagined them to look in her own head, and she said the way I had done it was very professional. This was brilliant feedback for me as I couldn't have received  bigger compliment for my work. Her only criticism was a few grammatical errors, which in future I will also get someone else to proof read before sending to a client. We started off discussing the promotional video and Carly like my ideas for the opening. This was to have a slow zoom in on an old television with the logo as an animated graphic. Carly had visioned even this before and referred me to the studios timeline on the website. With this I could see an old television, of a similar age and style to the one on my brief. Again, thi...

Commission: Finding and Meeting Animator

Image
In my project I knew I needed to animate some pretty complex graphics, and knew it was something I was no expert in. However, this video I am creating for the studio is to be as professional as possible since they will be using it to show their clients their facilities. The difference between a perfect video and a good video could be the difference between content creators filming their or not. Videos are incredibly important to modern businesses as they show quickly and easily what a company is or does and their facilities. If Iw as to filming edit really well but my graphics/animation weren't of the same standard it would really show and stand out. This is why I decided to get in touch with a student studying animation at UCA (University for the Creative Arts) who would have more of an idea on what he's doing than what I would. I asked Joe Warrilow who said he could help and would be interested in helping. He studies this in depth at university so would also be of benefit ...
