Pre Production: Editing the Trailer

Image
Editng trailer wasa difficult process with such limited video footage. However, having researched different Netflixtrailers, I found I genuinelely liked their style. One crucial part of this, however, is having the footage to produce this and this is something I would like to improve, so I am treating this as a trailer tester to see if the style works for our documentary and how I want it to look.  So far I have only been able to use footage from 'The Innovation of Justice' Shoot and also archive photos and videos. Whilst these are elements I will include in the actual trailer, I would want more interview and scene recreation footage to make it better branded to our film.  The Editing Process  behind this was fairly difficult but after brainstorming some ideas and researching into other trailers form Netflix I found a style I liked and a lot of that style came mostly from the edit, the choice of footage and audio and editing style. My first step in actually e...

Pre-Production: Camera Research/Test Shoot

Image
Cannon C300 Although the kit provided at university is really great quality and is a kit I have mastered over the years, I was very keen to learn more about other cameras out there to see what would be best fitting to our documentary. The Cannon C300 is a typical documentary camera used with high end companies such as the BBC for documentaries and various VT Sequences. This is mainly for the naturalistic look it gives and the way it responds to natural light. "the Canon C300 Mark II is the gold standard. Here are the top three reasons why I’m using it on my next documentary shoot."(Shinnik, 2018) I don't think I will be using this camera as I don't believe it has the cinematic qualities I would like for this documentary as it's too natural looking. Whilst I want the documentary to be natural, a cinematic look from inspired documentaries on Vimeo (Finding Serenity) and Netflix (Time: The Khalief Browder Story) I want this documentary to really push ...

Pre-Production: Title Sequence planning and testing ideas

Image
A good title sequence can bring brand identity and instant recognition. It will set the tone for the rest of the piece. "I think a well-crafted title sequence can introduce the audience to the mood and theme of the film and filmmaker’s intentions and set up the expectations of those watching. It’s really an ART of Visual Design. Creative Studio work only on that, close to the director." (https://independentrevolution.net/2014/02/11/the-art-of-title-the-importance-of-the-opening-title-sequence-in-film/) Ideas for the Journey? I found the best way to brainstorm ideas for the title sequence was to use the inspiration from my mood-board and to mind-map the ideas. For me filming the journey. Maybe clocks moving to show time, justice scales, writing pencil, law books, interrogation desk, fingerprints on paper, computer screen copying data, text messages, pressing the tape record button. The idea from this is to film parts like its a journey (based on the documentaries j...

Pre-Production: The Parallax Effect 2.5 D Research

Image
This has even inspired me to include the parralex effect with arcive footage. As editor, I would like to make still images move int he documentary, something that was used in a docuemntary on Vimeo I analysed in first year 'Joy'. The way this was used really facinated me and whilst for the Storytelling unit I never actually got to use or test the Parralax effect, it is something I used to adapt the limited access I had with teh second year 'Maidstone TV Studios' promotional video content. In my research I decided to watch this short film again to see how nicely oit fit in with the documentary. As I have previously mentioned before, Vimeo tends to be more experimental with its stylistic choces as it is rhe place for growing and upcoming artists. This unconventional documentary style was very effective and looking a the parralax effect again I can see this is definitely something I want to include in the edit of our docuemntary, without it coming across as beng too tac...

Pre-Production: Archive Research

Image
Archive footage or stock footage is the material obtained from a film library or archive centre and is placed into a documentary to show the audience historical events or to add detail without the need for additional filming. This is something that could bring a lot of context and background to our documentary and make it feel all the more professional. Archive footage is difficult to get hold of and permission/access for. For educational purposes, it's not necessarily a bad thing. I would rather use archive film rather than still images as I feel images can sometimes distract form he piece and take the audience out of it. However, it is something that may be essential, especially if there is cover limited videos footage around. Given the subject matter, images may be useful in showing other police cases where evidence has failed like with pictures of the individuals involved or details regarding the case. Depending on how it is approached of course it can still be very effect...

Pre-Production: Storyboard Research

Image
Film storyboarding is not a necessity when making creating a film but it is something nearly all filmmakers use to help aid their visual imagination onto paper and then finally a moving image. In many of my projects I have found storyboards useful as a visual representation of what is in my mind, so when shooting my mind doesn't go blank and I have something to stick to. Although a shot list can be useful to this, it's not a visual aid and sometimes you do just need a visual aid. In previous projects, it has also helped me to see if ideas work and actually look effective together. Although I am not amazing at drawing it is something valuable to have nevertheless. Storyboarding in this project will help me visualize what is actually being seen on screen and visually what the documentary is showing. Being that I am Director of Photography, I would like to see what shots will work in sequence with each other. As an editor, this will also help me see what I am going to work int...

Pre-Production: Inspired Practitioner Peter Jackson

Image
Recently, Peter Jackson, director of Lord of The Rings and many other well recognised films has recolored WW1 Footage. This is something I have watched to research how I can make arcive footage different and also help aid the storytelling process. The documentary is called 'They Shall Not Grow Old.' Somehting that was clearly very vital to this process was access to all the videos and photos. This is something myself and the rest of the world has not seen beofre and is a real revolution in the documentary community. The following is a quick look at how Jackson colorized this 100-year-old footage to give the world a new look at the Great War: As an editor this is really interesting not only from an archive perspecive but from a color grading perspecitve. The fact they have spent so long coloring this footage frame by frame is remarkable and it has taught me to not rush color grading. In my color graidng tests I have found that I can be more precise in my colorinmg and ...

Pre-Production: Idea Evolution: Choosing Our Final Idea

Image
The last film I'll be making at UCA, and it's going to be a documentary. The decision behind this came at the end of second year after reflecting on how much I enjoyed previous units, and waht I have learned about my own style. I really enjoyed documentary making at the end of first year and is somehting that has stuck wiht me. I do however feel I have an unfinished business with it. Whilst I was pleased wiht the outcome, I feel as DoP I could really impriove the shoot style, and I would like to bring in elemts i have learned from other units like Transitions and external priejcts like the FIrm Awards in bringing back the cinematic look in my work. The documentayr I made in first year was enjoyable but I feel the formsatitng was a little off. I dint enjoy going from interview to interview, and I feel other than being a young person himself, the prese ter didnt really relate or engage veyr well wiht the documentary. I think from previous units I have really been able to showcase...

Pre-Production: Go-Pro Test Shooting

Image
Before shooting our documentary, I went out and tested the GoPro Hero2 at the Innovation of Justice event to see the audience and people coming in doing speeches etc. When there, I tested out various angles and what kind of images come form them, how stable it is, how it reacts to changes in light and white balance, and focus. As these aren't things you can control in camera like more advance main filming cameras, it was interesting ton see what would come of it. I would also allow myself to edit and correct colouring in post production to see if the go-pro would be a useful additional tool for our documentary and see if it would fit in with the overall aesthetic. Whilst I was satisfied with its battery lifespan and ability to shoot a TimeLapse, I feel the quality was slightly hindered here. This is something I would like to try and improve for the actual production but regardless this is a time-lapse that could even be used in the final film depending on how I feel it fits in ...

Pre-Production: Social Media Promotion

Image
Television series or documentaries don't typically have websites about them, this is something done more with films. However, I felt it was important to include it on our companies website briefly but have links to social media. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/evidencewithheld/ I decided to create a brief facebook page and a twitter page. These are two major platforms; I don't want to include an Instagram promotional page, as ideally, I would like to include advertising through Instagram pop-up ads which would appeal on peoples feeds. With encryption, what people like and the search will relate to the adverts that come up on their feeds, so people who are interested in Netflix, documentaries or crime and justice, this should come up as an advert. "77% agree with the statement "I wish there were a way to ad-filter instead of ad-block completely."(VIEO Design, 2018) It is so easy and useful with today's social media and technology to get your conten...

Pre-Production: Contacting Police for Prisoner Interview

Image
In order to progress our project further, we decided to call the the police to enquire how we would cop about filming a prisoner and what the sensitivity and ethics are behind this or if it is something within our power to even do. Jack spoke on the phone whilst I wrote down details of the conversation and information that may be useful to us. The lady we spoke to was very helpful and gave us a boost of confidence in thinking it wasn't something so far out of our reach. She said we need university official paper and write to the management coordinator - Govern secretary Outline what we are doing sensitivity etc and say "regardless of your response (yes or no) we would really appreciate a return call so we know if we can move it forward or not". We also need to include a tutors contact details and to keep a copy of the letter ourselves. We were advised to approach the prisoner and write a letter to them alongside our letter to see if they are interested in being inter...

Pre-Production: Meeting with Helen

Image
After Meeting with Helen, myself and Jack felt more confident in actions when being able to talk about the police. She gave us a useful insider on right of reply and everything that goes into producing a documentary where such topics and issues are being discussed.   FOI- Freedom of Information Request. The Freedom of Information Act. The Freedom of Information Act ( FOIA ) gives you the right to access recorded information held by public sector organisations. Anyone can request information – there are no restrictions on your age, nationality or where you live. (gov.uk) We just need ton make sure t hey are given enough time and need to be very specific about what we want.    FOI made MPs expenses scandal meant come out. What are the figures on number of convictions overturned on this area?- Research  The IPCC is complaints process stands for 'The Independent Police Complaints Commission' and "exists to increase public confidence in the police complai...

Pre-Production: Why and how did we decide on our final idea?

Our idea has developed a lot since the start of this unit and because of the complexity of this idea, its development has mostly come through research. Something we struggled with was finding an angle and that's something we have actually managed to resolve. We did go down the route of digital evidence but after speaking to experts regarding the topic their were the fairly vague answers and as a subject there isn't much to talk about given digital evidence being used in court wasn't as big of a revolution as we initially thought it was. However, after moving forward form this we did notice a pattern and common trend in cases where evidence is withheld is the disclosure of evidence and the prosecution and police holding back crucial evidence from the jury. Getting contributors sorted for this was not going to be easy but with our noses to the ground is something me and Jack could manage.

Pre-Production: Researching Cinematic Documentaries

Image
I would really like this piece to be visually pleasing to give in a particular niche over other documentaries of this style. The usual; typical BBC Three style is very handheld and not very cinematic but by making this documentary cinematic and well shot/edited there should be no reason this can't also be a work of art. We will only be able to demonstrate this through creativity and research. If we get the resources to shoot in cinematic quality we can make it another highlighting feature to our work. For inspiration and research, I decided to watch lots of short films, and my go-to place was Vimeo, where documentaries are seemingly more original than what you would expect to see on mainstream broadcasts like BBC Three. From watching these shorts, I am finding out what styes I like and dislike. Just like the content creators here, I have the freedom to experiment with style and see what works for me, which is an opportunity that shouldn't be ignored. One that stood out to m...

Pre-Production: Professor Green Documentary Research

Image
The Professor Green documentary series on BBC Three is in many ways a slightly different genre to what we are preposing. However, it is a documentary of inspiration that always lies in the back of my head. Something about out the way it is carried out really stood out to me and I believe that is due to the 'realness' of the leading presenter, Stephen Manderson (Professor Green). Stephen seems to relate to the people he walks with and interviews and you can see genuine empathy in not just his voice but also general persona whilst discussing troubling and heartbreaking issues. Although the man is now a millionaire, and some would say he is not relevant to this, he clearly hasn't forgotten his routes and is using his success and accolade for good. Steven didn't have an easy childhood himself and adult life hasn't been much easier. We are first introduced to this in his first and what I believe to be his best documentary 'Suicide and Me'. Despite the ...
