Pre-Production: Website Design

Through branding, one of my requirements was to create a website promoting our company and our new coming documentary. (www.hourglasspictures.com)

Wanting our website to represent the documentary as closely to Netflix as possible I have created a website on Wix.com about our company 'Hourglass Pictures' and included a section dedicated to previous work and our upcoming documentary. This should appeal and set in stone the branding for Netflix as closely as possible and represent the brand as much as possible.

But before designing the layout I wanted to research into the websites of other documentaries and Netflix series to find the key graphical elements they use so I can get a better understanding of how I can make our website represent the show as much as possible, for example, a key element to the Netflix branding is to have a simplistic design

The color grey and white is used through the website. The reasoning behind this was so it felt very clean and professional, something our company would market towards. If we made tv shows for children, our colors would be bright and bold. "Color plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live. Color can sway thinking, change actions, and cause reactions." (Colormatters.com, 2018)

I decided to add a  graphic of the parallax 2.5D effect by using a photo form Maidstone Studios, which was used in my project commission in the second year. I think this tells website viewers what we do, what we are about and shows an example of our work.

Key elements:
Home Page- For the home page of our website I wanted to keep it simple with not too much information, so I decided that the homepage was where I put the Production Company Logo and the name of our company. Below this, we are instantly greeted with looks to social media (Instagram) and also Vimeo.

I have created pages and subpages that feature previous client satisfaction reviews and our companies background information on how we started. At the top of the home page and every sub-page, there is a navigation bar so the website is easy to understand and navigate.

As you scroll down, we see a section ‘About Us’ which describes what the company is about and what we do. Next to this is a picture of us so website visitors can see what we look like and put a face to the company. “We know that they are models and they are not endorsing the product, or even work there, but seeing a face makes us trust a website more.” (marketingnerd.co.uk, 2018). It reads: “After working with film for the last 4 Years, studying Television Production, BA (Hons) and working on television shows for the likes of BBC and ITV, we have the creative ideas and skillsets to cater for whatever you’re looking for. If it’s television, online, commercial or corporate, we will strive to exceed your requirements. This ranges from promotional videos to put your company out there to filming your personal special events. We have been producing content for companies as big as Maidstone Television Studios, as well as the annual Firm Awards”

We wanted to give clients the chance to see how much care and attention goes into our work and how we stay up to date with modern, advanced technology. Alongside this is our company show-reel so clients can see our standard of work. This is a short montage of clips edited together. “A Show-reel is a collection of parts from a variety of projects; include a breakdown that details the productions that make up the show-reel.” (IFSS Production, 2018).

Along with this, there is a sub-page with a few examples of the full versions of our previous work.

Then finally we have the page about our latest upcoming project 'Evidence Withheld'. The page is inspired by the website design of 'Gone Girl' (see: https://georgewing42.blogspot.com/2018/11/pre-productionbrandingpromotion-website.html). We wanted to make the show really come to life and prove this is real and something really happening. The clips are also an assorted montage from the title sequence.

This also includes the links to our Vimeo, facebook, twitter, and Instagram. I noticed from my research that documentaries and most television shows don't have websites it is usually with just films. And if they do it will usually contain links to social media. I wanted to include the documentary on the company website to improve branding.
