Pre-Production: Test Shoot Planning
As part of our project, me and jack need to attend the innovation of justice event in Manchester, in order to get some surrounding background information on our project. This is fundamental for not only research but the opening to our documentary. Whilst filming early is stressful given we don't have as long to plan, its some crucial filming required for our opening story.
Storyboarding is a practice have learned and developed throughout this course. It was imporant to understand the location and research it before filming there. However, my skills in drawing aren’t amazing but to me this didn’t matter. A storyboard is something for me to read off when shooting and to put my plans to paper. “Other folks swear by their storyboard software, or put together simple computer animations. Whatever tools you use, try not to spend a huge amount of money on them. The results are just a means to an end- like pencil sketches are to an oil painter” (Vincie, 2017). I like to storybaord all of my ideas. Below is a scan of the storyboard I made for our ‘Innovation of Justice’ conference test shoot. I desinged the template myself. It gave me a nice, clear guide to follow so I had a plan for when we walked in.

Innovation of Justice is set up buy our presenter Liam Allan, and is run with the aim of breaking the barriers between victims of miscarriages of justice and those who can change or influence the law. We have four events planned around England and Wales, with the final event ending in the House of Commons. We aim to cover topics such as; issues facing the legal profession, disclosure failings, problems with the offence of joint enterprise, false allegations and more in these conferences. After the conferences, everyone who is brought together will help nominate and elect a board of representatives that will propose the required changes to the CPS, Police and Justice Committee.
Something I thought quite useful to this location was the age and heritage of the building. It was built in 1962 and the design is pretty ahead of its time.
"The Renold Building was designed by W. Arthur Gibbon of Cruickshank and Seward. It was one of a suite of white concrete structures on the UMIST campus in Manchester. It was the first of its type in the UK – an entire building to house lecture theatres and seminar rooms. It is also one of the earliest UK projects to assume a tower and podium configuration after SOM’s Lever House in New York.....Gibbon wanted the student population to provide life and colour to the scheme, thus the large circulation areas were treated neutrally and provided the backdrop for a mural by Victor Pasmore. The most prominent device for display and circulation however was the stair tower, a perpendicular projection of perilously thin glazing bars. This element was a part of the evolving modern language of the firm"

After learning about this location, I was inspired to use this in the documentary. Since we are opening with archive footage of the first case where technology was used as digital evidence and the revolution of technology, it would be a great link into the next part of the opening of Liams event. It would be a good idea to use archive footages/images of Renolds building and then transform into the present when Liam holds his conference. Below is an image I edited together of the archive photo and a more recent photo to show howl little it has changed. This effect would also fit in nicely with the cinematic aesthetic I want to go for.

Interior :
As you can see, the inside of this building is the top a standard lecture theatre. Because it is so far for us to travel and location recce on such a limited budget we are not able to recce the location. Instead, I have research ed the building and various images. This will allow me to see what sort of shots can I get whilst there in order to plan my shot-list and storyboard. Whilst this isn't a plan I will stick to properly, it is really useful to have something in mind so if I do get stuck I have some pre-planning to fall back on.
