Pre-Production: Go-Pro Test Shooting
Before shooting our documentary, I went out and tested the GoPro Hero2 at the Innovation of Justice event to see the audience and people coming in doing speeches etc. When there, I tested out various angles and what kind of images come form them, how stable it is, how it reacts to changes in light and white balance, and focus. As these aren't things you can control in camera like more advance main filming cameras, it was interesting ton see what would come of it. I would also allow myself to edit and correct colouring in post production to see if the go-pro would be a useful additional tool for our documentary and see if it would fit in with the overall aesthetic.
Whilst I was satisfied with its battery lifespan and ability to shoot a TimeLapse, I feel the quality was slightly hindered here. This is something I would like to try and improve for the actual production but regardless this is a time-lapse that could even be used in the final film depending on how I feel it fits in when it comes to the final edit.
I also tested the timelapse feature and attached the camera to the window at the back of the room using the suction accessory. It was difficult to position as I wanted to focus on the audience form the font initially, but there was no real way of keeping the camera positioned there. This didn't hinder the look format he back and I feel that worked better as it felt moire immersive with the audience and showed the back of their heads so there were no issues with filming them. The amount of noise/grain was slightly dissapoiuinting but I believe that was more due to the poor lighting conditions in the room which was proven to being a struggle with the main Panasonic cameras and Cannon 5D.
In editing, I also put a gaussian blur over the time-lapse halfway through, as I prefer it blurred to it being sharp, especially since it hides the grain.
