Edit archive photos to look 3D and show depth of field like in the photo to he right from a short film 'Joy Frank'. The male on the right fades away. The photo also has depth which is weird in an old photo as cameras wouldn't have had that capability then. Here is a rough example of what the pictures will fade to- Old to New. Critical Perspectives: Globalisation

Image
Consequences CNN have been accused of staring up 'compassion fatigue' throughout their reporting of global human suffering. Rather than motivation and mobilising change amongst world powers and individuals't suggests it has desensitised the audience to major world powers Furthermore, focusing on particular events of 'crisis coverage', global tv news coverage ignores many more significant events and therefore they are excluded from their policy debate. Filling air time, but not necessarily with something thats going to make a change. Bitesize pieces. When related to news, globalisation is distinct from globalisation un general-which tends to focus upon socioeconomic loans such as the impact of international. Having a dramatic tone and generically formatting but still with their individual brands. How we put stories together can change how we look at stories and put them together. Aid packages to charity but don't look at the root cause and how it may ...

News Production: Project Evaluation

Image
News Production has been an interesting unit, and I have definitely learned a lot from it. When I first started it I though it would share a lot in common with our documentary unit; its usually topical news, and how wrong I was. This Unit we had to make our own News Channel (News Grad) and  not only create its first episode  but also create a full channel, promotional trailer and website. Pre-Production Pre-Production is a challenging but exciting process. It is where our idea was born and after our first meeting we came out with loads of different suggestions and we were all able to contribute our own thoughts and opinions. It was this flow of ideas that created the grounds for our idea; News Grad came from my idea of having a tech section where we review cheap and affordable tech (which soon evolved to also having DIY tech). Gavin had the idea of student nurses which was current in the news, which then became our live story. Jack and Simon wanted to talk about saving m...

News Production: Fine Cut Feedback

Today was our fine cut viewing, and although we hadn't completely polished our programme, we would've really appreciated the feedback from Helen. As it turned out we received a lot more constructive feedback than we initially thought, which seemed like a setback but was actually genuinely useful. I knew our piece was missing something and at times seemed tedious with its limited camera positioning, and lengthy pieces to camera. Our option was to cut this down and have quicker cuts, as Helen suggested the high energy is lost with the lengthy PTCs with one shot. Because our episode contained one live reports and two pre-recorded, but our criteria was only one of each. We discussed the idea of re-shooting our top five tips because the lighting was 'orange looking' and the tips weren't cut-fast enough. In the end we agreed to completely scrap the top five tips all together and just keep the tech, DIY tech and important current news story. That way we could focus on an...

News Production: Re-Shoot After Feedback

After our feedback from Helen in todays fine cut viewing, we replanned our running order and what we needed/didn't need and what we wanted to re-film in order for its sequence to make sense. Our new running order is now: I ntroduction - Me having a photoshoot for my graduation going into PTC (Piece To Camera) to introduce. This was originally just for the tech section but it works well as an opening in general and is really well shot.   Tech Sectio n- Reviewing shower bluetooth speaker and LED light- Party skit DIY Tech - Introduction to DIY tech Building DIY tech, then demonstration Leads onto Outro DIY into... Jack introducing Student Nursing - Live interview  After myself and the rest of the group agreeing on this running order, we decided it was time to re-film some introductions to the new order, and ways to link to make it work. Helen said in her feedback that we needed to link everything together rather than have it more in separate blocks ...

News Production: Making the Promotional Video/ Top Line

Image
Our intentions for the promotional video was to briefly introduce the show; it needed to be fast pace, quick and straight to the point. Thats the energy we want in each episode so its even better to display this in the promotional video. A way of achieving this fast pace was to start off black and white in a lecture room, which is supposed to have a full atmosphere. This then goes straight into a quick, bright coloured piece to the camera, with quick whip pans. These whip pans were our first attempt at them and they came out really well. The trick was to film in order, remembering the last direction the pan whipped to. When on camera, for one of our first takes he forgot to whip pan at the end. This wasn't too much of an issue as we had chance to re-film and Gavin learned from it.  I thought the opening would be good to start off dull and boring, as it is interesting, holds peoples curiosity which sound like a bit of a juxtaposition. But when the music perks up, energy perk...

News Production: Editing

Image
After spending a long time in pre-produciton and filming, it was now time to move on to the big edit. Editing itself was a lot easier than we thought, as any problems we faced when filming are eliminated. So, for example I was concerned about the green screen footage being too 'orange', which would've taken away from its realistic studio aesthetic. However, having adjusted the white balance again in post production, the footage actually looks brilliant, and I can't fault it. However, this wasn't necessarily the case for the green-screening we filmed of Jack.  Not because of lighting or anything but because the green screen was narrower than his movement, so he would express his dialogue a lot through actions like moving his arms. This is great as it comes across as energetic, but unfortunately him going outside the green screen means in the edit his arm would cut out. As a result we set up the green screen and refilled these parts which was actually a much quicker...

News Production: Editing the Live Interview

Image
I found editing the live interview to be quite tricky as I wanted to touch it up properly, but this was also our live element so could only edit in cutaways. The footage I had to work on feet almost beyond repair. The audio was disrupted with background traffic, and needed to be changed. We had a great interview, where Emma, our student nurse gave us all good answers, elaborative for each and every question, so to nether her properly wouldn't have done it any justice. So my first instinct was to try and edit this in 'Adobe Audition'. I tried watching a few tutorials on how I may solve the problem, but had little luck in practice given I hadn't used Adobe Audition so extensively so fat. I spoke to Sam Creamer and together we went over a several solutions in order to try and fix the audio issue. The first was to apply a 'voice enhancer' where I would enhance the 'female voice'. Whilst this raised Emmas volume slightly, it wasn't enough to justify a g...

News Production: Shoot day 4

Image
Today we had an early start at the studios, where we first filmed our DIY tech construction video, which we had previously VO’d the day before. I knew what I had said in the VO as I rehearsed the lines so I was able to accurately go through the building process in order of how I said it. I suggested that we film it in a go pro above the desk so its a birds-eye view. I thought if we had the poles used to hang the green screen, we could attach the GoPro on the pole and use sliders on the Panasonic 4K comer to create a smooth tracking shot. This came out well overall and the projector actually ended up working really well. We then filmed my introduction to the tech section which which involve dong a ‘mock’ graduation photo shoot and then taking the gown off doing a PTC to the camera. Our first attempt at this wasn’t so successful as we hoped it would be because the lighting was stationary. his mean when I walked towards the camera I would walk past the light and there would be shade on...
