News Production: Editing
After spending a long time in pre-produciton and filming, it was now time to move on to the big edit. Editing itself was a lot easier than we thought, as any problems we faced when filming are eliminated. So, for example I was concerned about the green screen footage being too 'orange', which would've taken away from its realistic studio aesthetic. However, having adjusted the white balance again in post production, the footage actually looks brilliant, and I can't fault it.
However, this wasn't necessarily the case for the green-screening we filmed of Jack. Not because of lighting or anything but because the green screen was narrower than his movement, so he would express his dialogue a lot through actions like moving his arms. This is great as it comes across as energetic, but unfortunately him going outside the green screen means in the edit his arm would cut out. As a result we set up the green screen and refilled these parts which was actually a much quicker process than last time as Jack knew his lines this time, and was familiar with them. We needed to set up the green screen for our websites photoshoot anaya, so it was good to get both ticked off at the same time.
After Gavin had animated our set, we began to edit the green screen footage with that as the background. Once color correction was complete, and the matting had been done our news studio was beginning to look more and more realistic, with some good depth. After watching 'Film Riot', one of our inspirations for this project, I liked the way they blurred out their green screened studio background and suggested it for our own. As it turned out this looked really good and was something we would like to keep. I like it because it creates the illusion that there is an actual studio there and the camera is focusing on the presenter(s). In creating the set, Gavin had used a 3D Model software called 'Sweet Home 3D', which allowed him to create our studio background.
When our rough cut was finalised we finalised, a fair bit needed changing. At times it looked like we were trying hard to be funny which wasn't so effective. So we needed to cut back on some of theses jokes for the fine cut. We had a fews issues that were yet to be fixed which lead to our fine cut, so we went to see Helen for more feedback.
