New Production: After Effects Workshop 2

Todays After Effects workshop was all about creating a title graphic. The things you can do with a title in Premier Pro is quite limited so its important to get to grips with it on After Effects which has more options available for graphics editing.

Th first stage was to add text by clicking the 'text logo'. For the sake of practice I used the word news.

The next stage of this was to create a boarder around the text and adjust the color. Adding a boarder is simple' simply add a strobe color which is a in the small box behind the main text color on the right hand side of the 'standard' workspace.

Moving the text into a graphic was the most complicated part, but after using 'Premier pro' I knew roughly what I was doing with keying and masking.

So all you do is key the position and scale at the start. Then move along the timeline to where you wan't the text to be its final size and position, then key again to that position. This will move to however you chose. So when i did it I had the writing large going down to normal size for it had the illusion it was coming out of the screen.

Whilst doing this we were also taught how to give off a shaking effect so its transition seemed more realistic. From this I have learned to not just stop at the basics; its important to play around with what the software is capable of because with every little adjustment the title seemed to get better and better.

Rather than a plain stand still title, I now had a graphic which is something I could definitely incorporate into our own group project. It makes it seem more professional and interesting. I have previously been able to edit such a graphic in 'Adobe Premier Pro' but not quite on the same level to make it look so nice and fitting to our news channel.

Trying it the 'Old fashioned way'

Ferg asked us all how they would've originally edited text with out masking it.  This means the text and the coloured background would all be one image not separate background and set which would make it more difficult to edit. This is how they would've previously edited not so long ago, before our computers and softwares became so advanced. This left us all a bit stumped, so he demonstrated it to us on premier pro.

After todays lesson I can say I feel a lot more confident using 'Adobe after Effects' and creating an animated title sequence.  I can use the software to make a moving title using multiple methods, both old and new. I feel intimidated by the softwares complex terminology and layout, and hope to be just as confident using this as I am Premier Pro soon.
